- US News. Nancy Guthrie's kidnapper could strike again at any moment: Who will be his next target?
The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie, has gripped Arizona and the nation, as law enforcement continues a painstaking search for the 84-year-old woman who went missing from her Tucson home on February 1, 2026.
Authorities have described the case as potentially targeted, but many details remain under investigation.
In a March 12 interview with NBC News, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos offered rare insight into the investigation, explaining that authorities have "beliefs" about the motive behind the abduction but are not ready to disclose specifics.
"We believe we know why [the kidnapper] did this and we believe that it was targeted, but we're not 100% sure of that," Nanos said. He cautioned that the public should not assume safety from similar crimes just because the incident involved the Guthrie family.
Sheriff Nanos emphasized that from the earliest stages, law enforcement had formed strong theories regarding the abduction, though he declined to discuss those theories publicly.
Investigators continue to examine forensic evidence, including "mixed DNA" discovered at Guthrie's home, which they hope will eventually help identify a suspect.
Investigation details and leads
The FBI and Pima County authorities have reviewed surveillance footage showing a masked individual tampering with Guthrie's doorbell camera on the morning of her disappearance.
The suspect has been described as a male of average build, approximately 5'9" to 5'10" tall, wearing a black "Ozark Trail Hiker Pack" backpack. Law enforcement is also exploring the possibility that the abductor may have had an accomplice.
Investigators have canvassed the neighborhood, asking residents about any unusual activity, including potential internet service disruptions on the night Guthrie went missing. Authorities have requested Ring and other home security camera footage from nearby homes, hoping that technology may provide additional clues.
Sheriff Nanos noted that while the investigation is ongoing, they are committed to pursuing every lead and considering all possibilities.
Despite nearly seven weeks having passed, no arrests have been made, and no official suspects have been named. The combined efforts of local law enforcement and federal investigators underscore the complexity of the case, particularly given Guthrie's age and the apparent sophistication of the crime.
Guthrie's family has remained actively involved in the search, issuing emotional pleas for her safe return and emphasizing the importance of community vigilance. Savannah Guthrie has highlighted her mother's health needs, urging anyone with information to come forward. A reward has also been offered for tips leading to Nancy Guthrie's safe recovery.
As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials stress that the public remain alert and share any relevant information.
