Kimi Antonelli converted pole position into victory in China, leading a Mercedes one-two finish ahead of teammate George Russell, while Lewis Hamilton secured his first podium for Ferrari in third.
At just 19 years old, the Italian became the second-youngest race winner in F1 history, delivering a performance that went beyond the usual "rookie breakthrough" storyline. The race itself showed something more important: Mercedes may once again be a real championship contender.
Antonelli controlled the race
The win was not the result of chaos or strategy luck. Antonelli started from pole, briefly lost the lead to Lewis Hamilton at the start, but retook control by lap two and managed the race from there, even surviving a late lock-up scare. Behind him, Russell secured second place, giving Mercedes a dominant one-two finish that highlighted the team's strong pace early in the season.
Meanwhile Ferrari showed signs of progress with Hamilton's podium, while Charles Leclerc finished fourth after an internal battle between the two Ferrari drivers.
The race also featured several disruptions:
- Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri failed to start due to technical issues.
- Max Verstappen retired with a mechanical problem.
- An early safety car was triggered by Lance Stroll.
Even with those events, Antonelli's performance stood out as controlled and composed rather than opportunistic Mercedes' gamble on Antonelli is paying off.
Antonelli's rise makes the result even more significant
The young Italian replaced Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, a massive responsibility for a teenager stepping into one of the sport's most high-profile seats. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff backed him early, having brought Antonelli into the team's junior program when he was just 11 years old and sunday's result validated that long-term investment.
Antonelli's victory also ended a 20-year wait for an Italian Formula 1 race winner, the first since Giancarlo Fisichella in 2006. For Mercedes, is a clear sign of motivation as the team may have lost a seven-time champion, but it may have gained the sport's next superstar.
What the result means for the championship
The Chinese Grand Prix also tightened the early championship standings. Russell still leads the drivers' standings with 51 points, but Antonelli's victory moved him to 47 points, just four behind his teammate. That dynamic could create an interesting scenario for Mercedes if they continue with the results:
- A team capable of fighting for wins
- Two drivers close in the standings
- A rookie already racing like a contender
After the race, Antonelli was visibly emotional, thanking the Mercedes team for helping him reach a dream moment in his career. For a driver who only recently entered Formula 1, the reaction reflected how quickly his trajectory has accelerated.
