Becoming a major success in the sporting world usually comes with an incredible ego and level of self-assurance, which can then lead people into the world of politics as they look to put their popularity to use.

One of the latest who could make that move is Conor McGregor, who almost seems like a name from the past in the UFC world as it has been so long since he stepped into the ring after an extremely extended recovery from a broken leg.

Chuck Liddell has claimed that McGregor would rack up a lot of votes if he were to run for president in his home country of Ireland.

"He's a fighter, he's a champion," Liddell said. "You have that leadership ability. I don't know what his politics are, I don't know what his thing is, but you have that drive.

"Just because I'm a good fighter doesn't mean I can go run my buddy's company. I know guys are great at what they do, I can't do it, but they can't do what I do either. It's a difference. I don't know him well enough to know, but I think if he puts his mind [he can] get the votes and see what he can do."

What other athletes have gone into politics?

One name that is actually more synonymous with politics than sports is Dwight D. Eisenhower. The 36th president of the United States of America played a number of sports at a high level before heading into politics.

In the world of boxing, Manny Pacquiao made a vert decisive move into politics at the end of his career. Starting within his career, Pacquiao was a member of the Philippine House of Representatives between 2010 and 2016. He was then elected to the Senate to continue his work.

One of the most famous examples is George Weah. Something of a cult favorite in the soccer world during the 1990s, the former AC Milan striker went on to become the president of Liberia. His son, Timothy, now plays in Serie A for Juventus.
