Kamila Sellier shocked the short track speed skating world when a brutal accident threatened to derail her Winter Olympics dreams, yet she has reassured fans she is recovering well after surgery.

Winning a World Championship medal had fueled Sellier's determination for Olympic gold, but during the women's 1500m quarterfinals, an unexpected crash put her ambitions on hold and sparked widespread concern.

"I know that one day i'll look at this picture and remember that i'm stronger than i ever believed. thank you for all your words of support, just wanted to let you know that i'm doing quite okay #thankyou," Sellier posted on Instagram.

The incident occurred when American Kristen Santos-Griswold attempted an illegal pass, causing a pileup that left Sellier struck in the face by a blade, while 14-time Olympic medallist Arianna Fontana also fell, creating chaos on the ice.

Medical staff rushed to the Polish skater's aid as officials paused the race, placing a white sheet around her for privacy, while spectators waited in tense silence at the Milano Ice Skating Arena.

Thankfully, Sellier was able to give a thumbs-up to the crowd before being stretchered off, and she received multiple stitches at the arena before being transported to the hospital for surgery, reassuring fans of her resilience.

"Kamila had surgery last night," a spokesperson for Poland told BBC Sport. "She's in good condition. We're waiting for further tests today, to check her eye for any signs of damage."

Fontana, though less severely injured, required assistance from her physiotherapist after her left hip was nicked, and she finished fifth in the finals, missing the chance to add to her medal tally at her home Games.

The accident highlighted the dangers of short track speed skating, where blades and high-speed collisions can cause serious injuries, yet Sellier's composure and gratitude toward fans have underscored her courage and determination to return.

With further tests planned to monitor her eye and full recovery, Sellier remains focused on regaining form, proving that even after such a frightening incident, her Olympic journey is far from over, inspiring fans worldwide.
