The nightmare continues for Lindsey Vonn. As the Olympic champion recovers from the crash she suffered during the downhill event at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games, one of the NFL's leading injury experts, Dr. Jesse Morse, has painted a grim outlook for her future.

Vonn was attempting an unprecedented comeback in alpine skiing: returning to Olympic competition at 41 years old, despite a long history of injuries that few athletes have ever overcome.

Just a week before the Games, an accident during a warm-up race in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, threatened to derail her dream. But, true to form, Vonn defied the odds.

With a torn left ACL, she competed in the downhill at Olympia delle Tofane-only to suffer a spectacular crash just 13 seconds into her highly anticipated Olympic return. Now, Dr. Morse has sobering news for her fans.

Dr. Morse's assessment

A few days ago, just over a week after the accident, the 2010 Vancouver Olympic championshared X-rays taken following six surgeries.

Analyzing the images, Dr. Morse listed possible injuries:

  • Severe proximal tibia fracture
  • Tibial plateau fracture
  • Metaphyseal/tibial shaft fracture

He noted that the fibula appeared intact, though the images did not confirm whether the femur was involved.

Morse added: "I wouldn't be surprised if there was an open wound and possible fasciotomy due to compartment syndrome."

Vonn faces a long road to recovery

Morse emphasized the difficult rehabilitation ahead: "A long rehab journey, but nothing she hasn't probably done five times already," referencing Vonn's history of overcoming injuries.

He cautioned, however:

Eventually, she will (likely) have to have her ACL reconstructed. Good luck, girl.

While Vonn has not yet spoken about her future, fans remain divided. Some believe she should retire from her storied career, while others hope for yet another heroic comeback.
