Connor McDavid made Olympic history Friday as Team Canada rallied to defeat Team Finland 3-2 at the death in the men's ice hockey semifinal at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

The Edmonton Oilers captain recorded his 10th assist of the tournament on Sam Reinhart's second-period power-play goal, taking his total to 12 total points - the most ever at a single Olympics featuring NHL players.

McDavid later added another assist on the game-winning goal to bring his tally to 13 points, extending the new NHL-era record.

McDavid surpasses Selanne and Koivu in NHL-era Olympic scoring

Earlier in the tournament, McDavid tied the 10-year record of 11 points set by Finnish Olympians Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu at Turin 2006.

Both Selanne and Koivu recorded their totals en route to a silver medal, but McDavid surpassed them during Canada's comeback victory over Finland.

Wearing the captain's "C" with Sidney Crosby sidelined due to a lower-body injury, McDavid has posted two goals and 11 assists through the semifinal.

Canada entered the tournament seeking its first Olympic gold medal in men's hockey since Sochi 2014, which was also the last Games to feature NHL participation prior to 2026.

Finland, the defending gold medalist, opened the scoring late in the first period when Mikko Rantanen beat Canadian goaltender Jordan Binnington on the power play.

The Finns doubled their lead early in the second period as Eric Haula scored shorthanded just 3:26 into the frame.

Canada responded late in the second when Reinhart converted on the power play, assisted by McDavid, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Midway through the third period, Shea Theodore tied the game with a precise shot that energized the Canadian bench.

With just 35 seconds remaining in regulation, Nathan McKinnon fired home a one-timer for the decisive goal, with McDavid picking up the secondary assist.

The victory sends Team Canada into the gold medal game, where they will face either the United States or Slovakia.

McDavid, a three-time Hart Trophy winner, now holds the record for most points at a single Olympic tournament during the NHL era, with at least one game remaining.

With three periods left in the gold medal contest, the Oilers star will have another opportunity to add to his historic total.
