Lindsey Vonn's accident shook Olympic skiing to its core. Fortunately, after undergoing four surgeries, the decorated skier finally returned to American soil today and couldn't help but express her gratitude for being home.
Images of Vonn crashing during her run in the downhill competition at the Milano Cortina 2016 Winter Games went viral.
The accident sent the Vancouver 2010 Olympic champion straight to the hospital, where she had to undergo four surgeries to repair her fractured tibia.
After a week in the hospital, Vonn was finally able to return home, and although there is still a long road ahead in her recovery, she expressed her gratitude for being back in her country.
Vonn thanks for being home
In a message on X (formerly Twitter), the skier recalled:
Haven't stood on my feet in over a week... been in a hospital bed immobile since my race.
Previously, Vonn had shared a montage of her transfer from the ICU in Italy to her hospital room in the US. In her second message, Lindsey admitted. "Although I'm not yet able to stand, being back on home soil feels amazing."
Finally, she sent her thanks back to Italy, saying, "Huge thank you to everyone in Italy for taking good care of me." Now, she will have to continue her road to recovery.
