The latest update surrounding trade rumors linking A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots suggests momentum toward a deal may be cooling rather than heating up.
Amid ongoing speculation about the Philadelphia Eagles star receiver's future, ESPN insider Mike Reiss reported Sunday that New England is "less inclined" to part with a massive trade package for a veteran star, reinforcing the idea that the two sides remain far apart in potential negotiations.
The Patriots have been the team most frequently connected to Brown, due in part to his childhood fandom and his previous relationship with head coach Mike Vrabel, dating back to their time together with the Tennessee Titans.
During NFL Combine week, Boston Herald reporters Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed reported that New England explored the possibility of a trade but viewed Philadelphia's asking price as "unserious."
The Eagles don't want to release Brown
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman reiterated that the organization prefers to keep elite talent, though he acknowledged the realities of roster management.
Our job as GMs, we've got to listen on anyone," Roseman said.
He added that the chances of moving a "great player" remain low. Reiss' latest reporting further clarifies New England's stance.
The Patriots, he wrote, do not consider themselves one player away from Super Bowl contention and are therefore unwilling to send a blockbuster package similar to the haul reportedly commanded in recent star-level trades - typically involving multiple first-round picks and established players.
The Patriots don't want to pay Brown's tag
That position effectively widens the gap between the two teams. Philadelphia is believed to be seeking premium compensation for Brown, while New England appears willing to engage only if the price drops significantly.
The NFL Combine often fuels league-wide speculation as executives and decision-makers gather in one place, but for now, the Brown-to-New England chatter remains just that - speculation.
Despite persistent rumors, no deal appears imminent as both franchises maintain firm negotiating positions.
