Time flies, and a year ago at this point, the New York Giants were strongly connected to Shedeur Sanders, who was projected as a first-round pick in the 2025 Draft. The need to select a quarterback for Big Blue was so significant that many fans were hoping for the arrival of Deion Sanders' son.
A couple of weeks before the Draft, NFL sources indicated that the interview between the Giants - specifically Brian Daboll - and Shedeur Sanders did not go well at all. Reports suggested that the current Browns quarterback did not handle the moment properly, appeared disengaged, and failed to identify intentional mistakes that were presented to him.
That is why the Giants closed the door on Shedeur Sanders. And it wasn't just them: the former Colorado Buffaloes player was projected as a first-round selection, yet five quarterbacks were taken before his name was finally called in the fifth round, with the 144th overall pick by the Cleveland Browns, where he eventually became the starter through Week 11.
The day the New York Giants fell in love with Jaxson Dart
Now that we are in NFL Combine week, the New York Giants shared videos on social media of Jaxson Dart's throws from last year. From that moment, Brian Daboll, then head coach of the Giants, was determined to draft him, although he kept a low profile until the surprise came on Draft Day.
With Daniel Jones' departure near the end of the 2024 season, it was clear that the Giants needed a quarterback. However, they remained quiet in their strategy and, before the Draft, signed Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson, leading many to believe they would not select a quarterback in the early rounds.
However, the surprise was even bigger. With the No. 3 overall pick, they selected Penn State defensive player Abdul Carter, and it seemed that would be their only first-round decision. But near the end of the round, they traded for the 25th pick with the Houston Texans to select Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart, who has now restored hope for the franchise.
Dart was named the starter in Week 4 last season, and both his impact and the team's energy were completely different. He finished with 24 total touchdowns in 12 starts, and now, with an experienced head coach like John Harbaugh, everything points to a bright future for the four-time Super Bowl-winning franchise.
