Tom Brady demands accountability from John Spytek; the situation with the Raiders is complicated

The General Manager had a forgettable first year

There is no doubt that one of the biggest disappointments of the season has been the Las Vegas Raiders. Although they were among the worst teams in the 2024 season, there was hope that a new project would make them competitive in the AFC West alongside the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos. That was not the case, however, as the Raiders finished as the worst team in the NFL.

This year marked the arrival of John Spytek as general manager. Spytek was part of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization that won the Super Bowl in 2021. He later hired Pete Carroll as head coach and brought in Geno Smith, who had been an important figure with the Seattle Seahawks in recent years and earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2022.

Ironically, the season began in impressive fashion after the Raiders defeated the New England Patriots on the road in Week 1, a team that eventually finished as the No. 2 seed in the AFC. That win, however, proved to be an illusion, as Las Vegas went on to finish the season with a 3-14 record.

John Spytek's message to Pete Carroll

Despite high expectations that Pete Carroll's experience would help transform the team, it simply did not work out. After just one season, Carroll was fired as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, and the organization is once again searching for a new direction-this time holding the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

John Spytek will remain in his role as general manager and stated that his relationship with Carroll was positive, while also taking responsibility for the poor results: "Obviously we didn't get everything right, and I take responsibility for that. I have to do a better job in that regard. But the coach and I had a great relationship from my perspective. And the fact that we didn't agree all the time doesn't mean anything negative. I don't know any great relationship where everyone agrees all the time; I actually think that would be counterproductive," Spytek said.

What is certain is that the Raiders will hold the first pick in the upcoming draft, giving them the opportunity to select Fernando Mendoza, who-against all expectations-has emerged as the top quarterback prospect available. Mendoza won the Heisman Trophy following a remarkable season with the Indiana Hoosiers, who are currently competing in the NCAA Playoff semifinals.

With Fernando Mendoza, Ashton Jeanty entering his second year, and Brock Bowers heading into his third season, the Raiders may finally be moving in the right direction-although first, they must determine who their next head coach will be.
