The Kansas City Chiefs' backfield overhaul continues to gain momentum as General Manager Brett Veach addresses the team's need for explosive depth

The franchise agreed to terms on a one-year contract with former Arizona Cardinals running back Emari Demercado.

While specific financial details have not been released, the 27-year-old enters a revamped room that looks significantly different than it did just a week ago.

Demercado's arrival follows the landmark three-year, $43.05 million signing of Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III, effectively replacing the production of Isiah Pacheco, who finalized a deal with the Detroit Lions earlier this week.

"Blessed to say the least," Demercado wrote on X. "Chiefs kingdom, lets work."

Demercado, a 5-foot-9, 215-pound undrafted success story out of TCU, brings a specialized skill set to head coach Andy Reid's offense. Over three seasons in Arizona, he appeared in 40 games, accumulating 819 rushing yards and 324 receiving yards.

Redefining the Chiefs' ground identity

The decision to pair the physical, early-down dominance of Kenneth Walker with a versatile specialist like Demercado suggests a more balanced offensive philosophy for 2026.

With quarterback Patrick Mahomes currently rehabilitating a torn ACL, the Chiefs appear committed to building a rushing attack that can reduce the burden on the passing game.

Demercado joins second-year pro Brashard Smith and newly signed ShunDerrick Powell in a rotation that will be tasked with revitalizing a unit that ranked 25th in the NFL in rushing last season.

Beyond his offensive utility, Demercado's notoriety in Arizona was briefly defined by a high-profile "lapse in judgment" during a Week 5 clash with the Tennessee Titans.

By choosing Kansas City, Demercado joins a championship-caliber environment where his explosive home-run potential can be utilized in high-leverage situations.

With Kareem Hunt remaining an unrestricted free agent, Demercado is currently positioned as a primary candidate for the RB2 role, providing a veteran safety net as the team prepares for the 2026 NFL Draft.
