Biggest Chiefs weakness will be easily filled as positional free agency class gets better

Kansas City has some big holes to fill, but Patrick Mahomes will need an influx of talent at one specific position.

The story of the 2025 Kansas City Chiefs season is somewhat simple: they couldn't win close games at anywhere near the level they did in previous seasons. Paired with what many believe is an outdated offensive scheme, Kansas City simply couldn't beat good teams in 2025.

Despite so many things going wrong around him, Patrick Mahomes played at an MVP level in the majority of his games played. Sure, he made some mistakes, but overall he was nowhere near the biggest issue with the offense. The weaknesses became clearer and clearer as the season progressed, and heading into the offseason, running back appears to be arguably the team's biggest need. The front office seemed to know it, as they were heavily rumored to be eyeing a trade for New York Jets RB Breece Hall before the trade deadline. Thankfully, they might still be able to bring him onboard for 2026.

2026 running back free agent class is stacked with good options

With the news that Hall will sit out the regular season finale for the Jets, it had fantasy football analyst Sigmund Bloom looking ahead towards the running back's future. He could be heading to free agency in the offseason, and he would join an RB class filled to the brim with a variety of talent.

Plenty of fans made note that the Jets could very well place the franchise tag on Hall, keeping him in New York for at least the 2026 season or until they trade him. It would be quite foolish for the Jets to let him walk for nothing after refusing to recoup any value in a trade at the 2025 deadline.

Whether Hall is available or not, there will be tons of intriguing options for the Chiefs to bring in on relatively team-friendly deals. Given that Mahomes had a lot of success with good pass-catching backs, players like Kenneth Gainwell and Rachaad White would make a lot of sense to fill a role that Jerick McKinnon previously shined in alongside Mahomes.

Kansas City could also bring in a bruising power back, like Javonte Williams or Tyler Allgeier. Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt have been that player for the Chiefs in recent seasons, but they simply haven't been very good, and definitely haven't been efficient. The Chiefs will surely bring in competition ahead of next season.
