The Dallas Cowboys entered the offseason facing a familiar storyline: a high-profile contract situation involving one of their top offensive weapons. The focus has been pinned firmly on wide receiver George Pickens, who is coming off a breakout campaign in Dallas and is due to sign a new contract. Rather than rushing into a long-term extension, the organization appears prepared to utilize the franchise tag.

Executive vice president Stephen Jones - the son of owner Jerry Jones - confirmed their stance, signaling both admiration for the player and caution in what the future looks like.

"We want Pickens here. We think the world of him," Jones said. "Want him here. Love him, and I think he wants to be here. So all that's a plus."

He added: "We've had people play under the tag and we've made deals with people that have a tag. It can go either way. We'll continue to really analyze the situation and see what's next."

The franchise tag does at least ensure Pickens remains in Dallas for the 2026 season, providing short-term security while negotiations potentially continue behind the scenes.

However, Jones declined to establish a definitive timeline for reaching a multi-year agreement, a pattern that has characterized the Cowboys' approach in previous contract disputes.

Pickens saga reaches inevitable conclusion

NFL insider Judy Battista recently suggested the tag was inevitable. "There is almost no doubt that Pickens is going to be tagged," Battista wrote.

"Traded from Pittsburgh to Dallas last May, he had a career season, logging 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns in the final year of his rookie contract.

"He also helped free up CeeDee Lamb in the pass game, and Stephen Jones has said the Cowboys want Pickens in Dallas.

"This should be a placeholder as the sides work toward a long-term deal, but the Cowboys have also shown a willingness to trade top players for draft picks. You can't rule anything out, but it seems like Pickens will be a Cowboy."

That last point is what keeps observers cautious. The Cowboys have demonstrated a readiness to make bold roster moves, including parting ways with elite talent such as Micah Parsons when contract dynamics become complicated.

While the expectation is that Pickens remains a centerpiece of the offense, precedent suggests nothing can be assumed.

On the field, Pickens proved to be a transformative addition. Acquired from Pittsburgh, he formed a dynamic partnership with Lamb, stretching defenses vertically and opening space underneath.

His 1,429 receiving yards and nine touchdowns represented career highs and provided balance to a passing attack that previously leaned heavily on Lamb.

Cowboys focus on two more pressing matters

Securing Pickens, even temporarily, allows the Cowboys to redirect attention toward other priorities.

Running back Javonte Williams is also coming off a standout 2025 season with 1,201 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, positioning himself as another candidate for contractual consideration.

Additionally, premier kicker Brandon Aubrey remains in ongoing discussions with the organization, as acknowledged by Jones.

Offensively, maintaining the link-up around Pickens and Lamb is the blueprint to follow, while seeking defensive improvements to return to playoff contention. The franchise tag offers flexibility, buying time for both sides to evaluate long-term value without immediate risk.

For now, the message from Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones is one of temporary commitment, one that may suit both sides in terms of kicking the can down the road.

Whether that evolves into a lucrative extension or another dramatic twist remains to be seen.
