The Dallas Cowboys entered the 2025 season with uncertainty surrounding their leadership. After a 7-10 record in 2024 and repeated playoff disappointments, the franchise made a bold move: they parted ways with head coach Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy had a respectable 49-35 record over five seasons, yet his inability to advance in the postseason, combined with a disappointing season finish, ultimately led to his dismissal. In his place, the Cowboys promoted Brian Schottenheimer, a longtime offensive coordinator with 15 years of experience in that role but never before a head coach.

The choice drew widespread skepticism from analysts and fans alike. Even star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who had worked under Schottenheimer in his previous role as coordinator, admitted he was unsure about the decision initially.

Despite initial doubts, Schottenheimer quickly set about earning the trust of his players. What distinguished him from previous coaching transitions was his proactive approach. Instead of waiting to assert authority solely through play-calling and strategy, Schottenheimer reached out to team leaders individually, demonstrating a personal investment in the players' perspectives and needs.

Lamb, who was in Miami when the news broke, received a direct call from Schottenheimer discussing expectations for both the offense and the team overall. This early engagement helped establish credibility and signaled that the new coach was committed to clear communication from the very beginning.

Leadership that resonated

Lamb reflected on the impact of Schottenheimer's leadership during their first team meeting.

"He won us over in the first team meeting," Lamb said on The Rich Eisen Show. He emphasized that Schottenheimer's confidence and decisiveness were apparent from the start, qualities that immediately resonated with the locker room.

"It was just how assertive it was. He took over the reins, understanding the situation and the shoes he had to fill," Lamb added. The receiver also noted that confidence, which is often lacking at the highest levels of the NFL, was a defining characteristic of Schottenheimer's approach.

Still, the Cowboys' 2025 campaign was a mixture of highs and lows. Despite flashes of offensive brilliance, Dallas finished 7-9-1. The defense struggled significantly, ranking among the worst in the league, while the offense was unable to consistently compensate.

The team held playoff hopes late in the season, with a 6-5-1 record after Thanksgiving, but ultimately lost four of their final five games, ending the season on a disappointing note.

Even so, Lamb's comments suggest that Schottenheimer has made a lasting impression on the team's culture. His ability to instill confidence, communicate effectively, and assert leadership has laid a foundation that could pay dividends as the Cowboys address roster needs and evaluate strategies for next season.

In a league where coaching transitions are often fraught with uncertainty, Schottenheimer's first season demonstrates that leadership style can be just as important as wins and losses in shaping a team's trajectory.
