Thanksgiving Day in the NFL is truly spectacular. The audience levels are unmatched. People remain at home for dinner with their families while enjoying three games that ultimately leave everyone satisfied.

Now the Black Friday game has also been added, which generated significant profits, and this has led the league, according to reports, to explore the possibility of completely taking over the family holiday week in November.

The NFL is studying the possibility of adding another game during that time frame. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is currently under intense review to determine whether the league could also occupy that date with an additional matchup that would sustain excitement from that moment through Friday and connect directly with the traditional Sunday slate.

The structure being proposed for football during Thanksgiving week

For all football lovers, Thanksgiving week would become a true feast to accompany the dinner shared and enjoyed with family. Everything would begin on the Saturday before.

  • November 21 would kick off with the traditional NCAA game
  • Sunday would feature the typical NFL slate of games
  • Monday Night Football would close that portion, followed by
  • Tuesday MACtion with the Mid-Atlantic Conference games, leading into
  • The Wednesday before Thanksgiving Day
  • Thursday is the key day for dinner with family and friends
  • To conclude with the Black Friday game
  • Saturday, November 28, brings rivalry week
  • Sunday is a normal NFL week

This would be complete madness for fans, who would spend the entire week enjoying the most-watched sport in the nation with both collegiate and professional representatives. In other words, it would become a historic week for the sport.

Roger Goodell told The Wall Street Journal that the league is analyzing the possibility of adding another game to the Black Friday window.

The massive television ratings for the NFL on Thanksgiving

The three Thanksgiving Day games in 2025 ranked among the most-watched broadcasts of the entire 2025 season.

  • 44.7 million in 2025
  • 34.5 million in 2024

The matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Dallas Cowboys averaged 57.2 million viewers on CBS, setting a record as the most-watched game of the entire regular season.

The previous record-holder had been the game between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants, which drew 42.1 million viewers in 2022.

Every offseason we look for new opportunities to best serve our fans in the schedule-making process."..."As Commissioner (Roger) Goodell has said, Thanksgiving and NFL football have become synonymous and given the continued growth of fan interest around our games on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, looking for additional opportunities tied to this special holiday is exciting for us to explore.

The league said Wednesday in a statement.

Teams selected to participate in this potential game would likely receive a bye week beforehand to ensure they arrive well rested. Given the ratings that have already been recorded, it is understandable why the league is considering placing a new matchup on the eve of Thanksgiving to further expand one of the most profitable and celebrated weeks on the NFL calendar.
