Kim Mulkey has left a legacy that will be extremely difficult to replace when she eventually decides to step away from the NCAA sidelines and stop leading the LSU Tigers. For a long time, it was expected that her top assistant, Gary Redus, would remain in place and eventually take over when Mulkey decided to move on. However, the entire scenario has now changed.
Redus has just departed to take on her first head coaching role at Rutgers. At 36 years old, this opportunity represents a major step in her career and has been widely celebrated. However, her departure leaves the Tigers without the possibility that she could take charge of the program when Mulkey eventually steps away.
Kim expressed that Redus's departure makes her very happy because it represents a major step forward in the career of someone who had served as her assistant since the second year of Mulkey's tenure at the university.
In fact, on the institution's official website, the coach shared an emotional message as a farewell to someone who had been an essential support both on and off the court. At the same time, she made it clear that she understands the importance of allowing talented people to pursue opportunities that help them continue growing professionally.
Redus spent four years working under Mulkey's leadership. The Hall of Fame coach played a key role in his development, and during that time Redus grew tremendously while gaining invaluable experience from working alongside one of the most respected figures in college basketball.
That is why, in the farewell message posted on LSU's X account, Mulkey did not hesitate to express everything she felt about her trusted assistant, who had served as her right hand during some of the most demanding moments of her tenure with the Tigers.
The new challenge for Gary Redus at Rutgers
For Gary Redus, the path that begins at Rutgers will not be easy. However, it appears that major challenges are exactly what motivates her and pushes her to demonstrate that she is ready for the responsibility while embracing the opportunity to become a transformative figure for the university.
For the institution, 2025 was a disastrous year. The team finished with a 1-17 record in conference play, which stands as the worst mark in the history of the Big Ten. Because of that, a complete rebuilding process is now underway.
The university's athletic director, Keli Zinn, believes strongly in Redus' potential and fully trusts that she can help restore the program moving forward into the next season. Zinn highlighted Redus' impressive recruiting abilities, which became evident during her time working at LSU.
This development reflects very well on Redus, but for the Tigers it now creates a major challenge as they look toward the future. The program must eventually determine who will take control when the coach with 41 years of experience in the college game decides to retire.
Although Mulkey's retirement does not appear imminent, it is still important for the program to begin thinking about who could be prepared to step in and lead the team when that moment eventually arrives.
