The "Coach Prime" era in Boulder has never been short on star power, but the structural integrity of that galaxy is being tested like never before.
Just 24 hours after defensive coordinator Robert Livingston parlayed his tenure in Colorado into a position with the Denver Broncos, his right-hand man and pass-rush specialist, Warren Sapp, has followed him out the door.
The university confirmed on Thursday that the legendary defensive tackle has officially stepped down, ending a two-year stint that saw him transition from a senior quality control role to the program's primary voice for the defensive front.
For Deion Sanders, the loss of Sapp represents more than just a vacancy on the depth chart; it is the departure of a shared philosophy.
Sapp and Sanders, both gold-jacketed icons of the game, were the faces of a recruiting pitch built on professional pedigree. However, as the Buffaloes prepare to open spring practices on March 9, that pitch must now be recalibrated.
The 2025 season, which began with soaring expectations, ultimately unraveled into a 3-9 campaign defined by defensive lapses and a five-game losing streak to close the year, leaving the program at a crossroads.
"Warren Sapp has resigned from the CU football coaching staff to pursue other opportunities," the university stated in a succinct release. "CU Athletics thanks Warren for his contributions to our football program over the last two seasons and for his commitment to our student-athletes."
A historic reshuffle amidst a 3-9 fallout
The timing of Sapp's exit leaves a significant void in the trenches, particularly as the team looks to rebound from a year where they surrendered over 30 points per game.
While Sapp's 2024 debut saw the defensive line rack up a conference-leading 39 sacks, the 2025 unit struggled to maintain that havoc, often finding themselves overpowered by the physical run games of the Big 12.
With Livingston now coaching the secondary in Denver and Sapp pursuing "other opportunities," Sanders has moved with characteristic speed to fill the breach.
In a move that creates a rare piece of collegiate history, Sanders has promoted recently hired linebackers coach Chris Marve to the defensive coordinator role.
With Marve joining offensive coordinator Brennan Marion, Colorado now becomes one of the only major programs in the country to feature a Black head coach alongside two Black coordinators. To fill the specific gap left by Sapp and the recently departed Domata Peko, Sanders has also elevated Dante Carter to oversee the defensive line.
"Warren Sapp successfully completed all of the necessary steps required of anyone who is employed at CU Boulder," the university had noted when he was first hired, acknowledging the hurdles the legend cleared to return to the game. Now, that journey takes a new turn.
