A7.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Japan on Monday, April 20, 2026. The tremor was recorded at 3:53 a.m. (ET), which corresponds to 16:53 in Japanese territory.

After the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued for coastal areas in the center and northeast of the country, with waves of up to three meters expected. Authorities ordered evacuations in vulnerable areas as a precautionary measure while monitoring the evolution of the phenomenon.

As the hours passed, and after observing a decrease in the intensity of the waves, the alert was reduced to a warning and later withdrawn.

Beyond the initial impact, the point that holds attention is the subsequent risk assessment. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued an "Aftershock Warning," a protocol that is activated only when a magnitude 7 or greater earthquake occurs in areas such as the Japan Trench or the Kuril Trench.

According to this notice, the probability of a larger magnitude earthquake is currently higher than usual. This does not mean that it will happen now, but it does mean that the level of vigilance remains high.

For now, the authorities continue to monitor seismic activity, while possible damage is being assessed and the population is kept informed of any relevant updates.
