A brief hospital visit meant to highlight creativity and support for young patients quickly turned into a flashpoint of criticism online. The key moment: Meghan Markle faced backlash after photos surfaced from her appearance at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, where she spent time with seriously ill children during a short publicity stop.
The Duchess of Sussex was photographed painting with patients and interacting with children receiving treatment at the hospital. Images shared on social media showed Markle sitting beside hospital beds and placing a comforting hand on one child during the visit.
The hospital posted the images on Instagram on March 12, describing the moment as an uplifting experience for patients in its Creative Oasis program.
"Today, we were honored to welcome LA's own @meghan, Duchess of Sussex, to CHLA's Creative Oasis, where she spent time painting alongside our incredible patients," the hospital wrote in its caption. "These special moments are a reminder of how powerful creativity can be in fostering joy, connection, and healing."
The visit was intended to highlight the role of art therapy and creative activities in helping children cope with illness. However, the images quickly drew attention across social media platforms, where critics questioned the nature and timing of the appearance.
Some commentary focused on how long Markle reportedly stayed at the hospital. Royal commentator Angela Levin claimed the visit lasted less than 20 minutes before the duchess departed after the photos were taken.
"I was told she left after 17 minutes," Levin wrote in a social media post while criticizing the optics of the visit.
Others raised questions about privacy, arguing that Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, have previously spoken about protecting children from excessive online exposure while allowing images of hospital patients to be shared publicly.
