- Formula 1. What effect is the new F1 regulation having on its drivers
- Formula 1. What team could challenge Mercedes in the F1 championships
Since Checo Perez returned to Formula 1 in 2026 with Cadillac, something was ignited once again on the grid. Not only because of his return, but because of what it represents: the Latin presence in an environment where his figure does not go unnoticed.
Last weekend at the Japanese Grand Prix, all eyes were once again on him, although not necessarily for the expected reasons. Unfortunately, his name was involved in one of the tensest moments of the season so far.
Mercedes driver George Russell said over the radio after an incident on track: "What is this idiot doing?" Seconds later, when confirming that it was the Mexican, he added: "Yes, it had to be Perez". The phrase soon sparked conversation.
What happened in Japan did not come out of nowhere. It is part of a series of episodes that, over time, have surrounded Perez's figure within the paddock.
Criticism of Checo and a fan base that does not leave him alone
One of the most memorable criticisms came in 2024, when Lando Norris publicly questioned Perez's place at Red Bull. The Briton claimed that he was not a real competitor for Max Verstappen and even left open the possibility of a change within the team.
The reaction was not long in coming. Every visit by Norris to Mexico has been marked by boos, in a direct response from a fan base that has made Perez more than just a driver: a representative.
That same year, the tension also spilled over onto the track. Liam Lawson starred in a scene that puzzled everyone when he showed the middle finger to Perez during the Mexican Grand Prix. From the stands, the response was immediate, as they booed him without restraint
With all this context and what recently happened with Russell, the outlook is not the best. It is not right, but with the background, the reaction of the Mexican fans seems predictable. And with the Mexican Grand Prix getting closer and closer, it seems that George Russell could become the new target of the stands.
