Criticism in sports can feel relentless, especially in the social media era where every mistake is amplified and analyzed. For Angel Reese, that scrutiny has followed her from her standout college days at LSU to her professional career, yet she has consistently turned it into motivation.

Rather than letting negativity define her, Reese has used it to fuel growth, both on and off the court, and to talk about causes that are close to her heart.

After missing the final stretch of the WNBA season due to a back injury, Reese made a highly anticipated return with Unrivaled's Rose BC. Her comeback, along with returning to the court, was about reconnecting with her teammates and delivering a powerful message about mental health.

"We live in a chaotic world," Reese told her teammates during practice. "Athletes face a lot of mental health challenges, so I just want everyone to know I'm happy we were able to come together another day and not take it for granted."

Her words highlight the fact that the mental well-being of athletes is just as critical as physical performance.

Turning criticism into opportunity

Reese has faced intense scrutiny throughout her career, from the viral moments during the 2023 NCAA championship to the infamous "mebounds" meme that mocked her for rebounding her own missed shots.

Instead of letting critics define her, Reese leaned in, trademarked the term, and launched a merchandise line featuring T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and slides. What started as a joke now serves as part of her growing off-court brand, with prices ranging from $28 to $75 and available in youth and adult sizes.

The initiative wasn't just to make money for herself. Proceeds from the merchandise support the Angel C. Reese Foundation, which combats cyberbullying and promotes safer online spaces for young people.

By transforming online trolling into support for others, Reese has taken a new approach to standing up for mental health -showing that resilience can be both personal and community-oriented.

She acknowledged that athletes face daily stress beyond the court-financial pressures and league uncertainties all contribute to mental strain. Having supportive teammates isn't just comforting.

Through her words and unwavering commitment to her teammates and community, Reese continues to redefine what it means to be a professional athlete.
