The sporting legal landscape has added a new chapter with the filing of a formal lawsuit in the Florida courts by VID. The organizing firm is seeking millions of dollars in compensation for the organization of two friendly matches played by the Argentina national team in October 2025, against Venezuela and Puerto Rico.

The crux of the conflict lies in the absence of Argentine captain Lionel Messi from the field of play during the first of the aforementioned matches. According to the terms put forward by the plaintiff, the organization contract stipulated that the team's main players, including specifically Messi, had to play a minimum number of minutes, a clause that is common in this type of international exhibition event to ensure commercial appeal.

The promoter claims that it made an initial outlay of $7 million to secure the rights to the matches, while also incurring high logistical costs. In the court filing, they allege that the Rosario star's failure to participate in the match against Venezuela caused irreparable economic damage, resulting from ticket refunds and the withdrawal of advertising commitments that depended on his active presence on the pitch.

A critical point in VID's argument is the management of public expectations. The organisers claim that they were assured of the player's participation until shortly before kick-off. However, Messi watched the match from a private box, which caused immediate discontent among fans who had paid premium prices for seats at Chase Stadium.

On the other hand, the defense of the interests of the national team and the player could be based on the technical and medical criteria that govern the management of elite athletes. It is common for federations to prioritize the physical integrity of their assets, adjusting workloads according to fitness or minor discomfort that does not necessarily imply a total withdrawal, but which discourages high-level competition.

The lawsuit also focuses on the disparity of situations experienced in just 24 hours. While the expected debut did not take place in the international match, the player did get minutes in his next match with Inter Miami. This fact is used by the promoter to question the justification for the absence, although from the sporting environment it is often recalled that recovery protocols vary dramatically between competitions.

Finally, the lawsuit highlights the growing tension between mass event promoters in the United States and international federations. The resolution of this case could set an important precedent on how "participation clauses" are drafted and enforced in modern soccer, where the image of a star is often the main driver of the entire financial structure of the event.
