Lorenzo Musetti's victory over Alex de Minaur on the third day of the ATP Finals has left an extremely open scenario in the Jimmy Connors Group. Despite having two wins under his belt, Carlos Alcaraz is not yet mathematically assured of a place in the semi-finals and, in the worst case scenario, could be eliminated. The key to the Spaniard's progress lies in his final match against Lorenzo Musetti. The scenario has become more complicated, but Alcaraz has his destiny in his own hands. The simplest premise is that by winning just one set in his clash against the Italian, the Spaniard will seal his ticket to the semi-finals. However, should the match be more adverse, a defeat may not be definitive, as the result of the duel between Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur will also play a decisive role.

What Alcaraz needs to reach the semi-finals of the ATP Finals, and to be number 1 until the end of the year

What Alcaraz needs to reach the semifinals

  • Win the match against Lorenzo Musetti (goes through as group winner).
  • Win at least one set against Musetti (guarantees qualification, regardless of the final result of the match).
  • Lose the match against Musetti, as long as Alex de Minaur beats Taylor Fritz (he goes through as 2nd in the group).
  • Lose in three sets to Musetti, and Taylor Fritz beats De Minaur in two sets (he goes through as 2nd in the group).

The only elimination scenario for Alcaraz is to lose to Musetti in two sets AND Taylor Fritz to beat Alex de Minaur (in two or three sets), which would cause a three-way tie in which Alcaraz would be disadvantaged by the set average.
