The guarantees in Brandon Aiyuk's contract with the 49ers have been eliminated, as reported by head coach Kyle Shanahan, who reacted to the unusual situation the wide receiver faced. San Francisco has a record of 7 wins and 4 losses and is second in the NFC West behind the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams.

Week 12 of the NFL promises an exciting matchup between Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers, teams with very different situations: securing their place in the NFC playoffs. While the 49ers cling to the hope of clinching a playoff berth with Purdy and McCaffrey leading the charge, the Panthers have the opportunity to end the second-longest playoff drought in NFL history.

Kyle Shanahan weighed in on the voided $27 million contract with Aiyuk

Shanahan said Aiyuk's contract situation was the first of its kind in his coaching career. "I've been coaching for over 20 years and I've never been in a situation where a contract has been voided," Shanahan told 49ersWebzone.com. "So it was extremely unusual for me... It takes a lot of things for a contract to be voided."

He continued, "Honestly, I've never dealt with that in my career or been in a building where that happened. So it was unusual, but it's something I can't get into right now." Aiyuk hasn't played for the 49ers since suffering a serious knee injury in Week 7 of last season. However, Shanahan expects the wide receiver to return to action later this season.

Why did the 49ers terminate Brandon Aiyuk's contract?

Aiyuk's guaranteed bonuses were voided because he failed to attend team meetings and other team activities. The outlet added that the player did not plan to contest the loss of those funds. Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million extension last year that included approximately $27 million in guaranteed money through 2026. Now, the 49ers could terminate his contract next year without paying him any further bonuses.

San Francisco would need to absorb approximately $29.6 million in dead money on the salary cap from bonuses already paid, but could spread that out over two years. The 49ers selected Aiyuk in the first round of the 2020 draft. He has recorded 294 receptions for 4,305 yards and 25 touchdowns with the team.
