The New York Jets once again endured a season to forget. They avoided finishing last only because the Las Vegas Raiders decided to claim that distinction. Even so, things continue to malfunction within a franchise that for decades has played the role of a secondary character in the city that never sleeps. At this point, not even the Giants have escaped criticism.

Could the Jets' supposed strategic plan unite Arch Manning and Mike Tomlin in New York

The Jets are still unable to find a defensive coordinator capable of helping them improve the many shortcomings they displayed throughout the 2025 season. They have already conducted several interviews with potential candidates, but none appear to convince decision makers.

With that burden hanging over them eight months before the start of the new season, everything seems to be aligning for Aaron Glenn to step into the role from the very first snap, occupying what is clearly a hot seat.

The Jets hold the second overall pick in the 2026 draft and will be unable to land their desired quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, who is expected to be the top selection and very likely headed to Las Vegas.

However, they could be in position for a better long-term option in 2027, selecting a passer who would allow them to rebuild patiently around a player who has demonstrated quality and the ability to carry a team and finally spark a resurgence.

The 2027 class offers several elite quarterback options

If the Jets once again finish near the bottom of the standings, or occupy the final spot because of poor performance, something that appears highly plausible, they would have the option to pursue a quarterback who offers greater upside for the 2027 season.

Among the options expected to be available at the most important position on offense are:

  • Dante Moore
  • Arch Manning
  • LaNorries Sellers

The complication, however, is that Glenn is not projected to remain in charge of the team by that point. With that understanding, The Athletic columnist Ian O'Connor has floated a theory that could be applied in New York.

According to O'Connor, the Jets should offer Mike Tomlin a $211 million contract to take control of the organization as both president and head coach, a move that could finally stabilize the long list of problems the franchise has endured.

Even so, the scenario appears complicated. First, Tomlin would need to show interest in returning to coach a franchise, and for now, his name has not surfaced among teams currently searching for leadership.

It is also possible that he prefers a calmer life, enjoying time with his children, or choosing the television analyst path that has been rumored. He could take this year as a sabbatical, relax, and eventually decide whether to return or simply enjoy life without the constant pressure of the NFL itself today.
