Winston has a baseball history, but it's still a bit of an odd selection.

There are plenty of reasons for why Jameis Winston becomes a fan favorite wherever he's playing in the NFL. In fact, even fans of other teams can't help but smile whenever they see him on TV, either giving an interview or slinging it on the gridiron.

Winston oozes charisma with an infectious personality that has made him a valuable locker room asset for many teams. Now, he's using that personality for a broadcasting gig, which everyone expected would eventually come once he retires from the NFL. But first, he will try his hand with baseball.

Netflix has employed Winston for their Opening Night coverage of the game between the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants, which will be the first game of the 2026 MLB season.

Winston's appearance on an MLB broadcast raised some eyebrows, but there's a reason other than his high-energy enthusiasm for why the quarterback will be there.

Jameis Winston was a successful pitcher for Florida State

Winston has a storied relationship with baseball, having played it in high school and being a dual-sport athlete at Florida State University for both baseball and football. He chose to attend FSU in part because they allowed him to play both sports.

Winston was both a pitcher and outfielder for FSU, but had far more success on the mound. As a hitter, he hit .209 over two seasons with the Seminoles. But as a pitcher, he finished his college baseball career with a 1.94 ERA, 0.912 WHIP and 52 strikeouts over 60.1 innings pitched.

With his strong personality and on-air charisma, along with his past baseball success, he's more than qualified for the role.
