- New York Giants The resurrection journey of Robert Saleh could end with a dramatic return to New York's sideline
The New York Giants officially ruled out rookie sensation Jaxson Dart for their Week 12 matchup against the Detroit Lions on Friday, citing a lingering concussion. As the rookie recuperates, veteran Jameis Winston has been tapped to serve as the interim starter once again.
With their electrifying rookie sidelined by another concussion, the Giants turned to Winston to crack the Lions' formidable defense in Week 12.
"Interim head coach Mike Kafka said QB Jaxson Dart is still in the concussion protocol and has been ruled out for Sunday's game," the Giants' official X (formerly Twitter) account posted earlier today.
Dart's fearlessness has cost him several concussions in his rookie year
The decision reflects a new level of caution from the New York front office. Dart, who suffered the injury during the team's Week 10 loss to the Chicago Bears, has now been in the concussion protocol multiple times this season. While he was spotted at practice this week, the team elected to sit him out rather than risk further trauma.
His "running tenacity"-which has produced an electrifying seven rushing touchdowns, second only to Josh Allen's 10 among quarterbacks-has also exposed him to significantly more hits than his peers. In his place, Jameis Winston will look to build on a mixed but promising performance.
In his first start against the Green Bay Packers in Week 11, the veteran was solid, completing 65.5% of his passes for 201 yards and keeping the Giants neck-and-neck with a strong opponent. However, his outing was marred by a critical red-zone interception that ultimately cost New York the game.
Winston will face one of the best defenses in the NFL
Winston faces a tall order in Detroit. He will be staring down the NFL's sixth-best passing defense, a unit that holds opposing quarterbacks to just a 62% completion rate. However, there is a silver lining: while the Lions don't give up many yards, they have surrendered 18 touchdowns this season, the tenth-worst mark in the league.
The Giants have not provided a concrete timetable for Dart's return, leaving fans anxious. The hope in the tri-state area is that the rookie will be cleared in time to take the field when the team visits the New England Patriots in Week 13.
