- Dolphins. Troy Aikman doesn't understand John Harbaugh as he continues new coach search for the Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins' head-coaching vacancy is increasingly pointing toward Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, league sources say, with the 46-year-old emerging as the most prominent candidate in a wide-open search.
While the Dolphins have yet to make an official offer, Hafley's second interview and existing ties to Miami's front office appear to have positioned him ahead of the pack.
NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reports that Hafley "blew everyone away in his initial, virtual interview with the Dolphins" and is now widely viewed as the frontrunner for the job.
Hafley's connection to the Dolphins extends beyond his coaching abilities. Earlier this month, Miami hired Jon-Eric Sullivan, a former Packers executive, as their new general manager.
Hafley worked closely with Sullivan over the past two seasons in Green Bay, where Sullivan held the role of vice president of player personnel.
Their prior collaboration may have strengthened Hafley's candidacy, providing the Dolphins with confidence in his leadership style and football acumen.
Despite Hafley's early momentum, the Dolphins have not yet finalized their decision.
Additional interviews are still scheduled, including a meeting with Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady. Meanwhile, Hafley remains a highly sought-after candidate across the league.
The Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Falcons, Las Vegas Raiders, and Arizona Cardinals have all requested second interviews with him.
He is also slated to interview with the Pittsburgh Steelers for their head-coaching vacancy, further illustrating the competitive landscape surrounding his next career move.
Hafley's defensive impact in Green Bay
Hafley has served as the Packers' defensive coordinator since 2024 after a four-year stint as head coach at Boston College.
In 2024, the Packers finished sixth in the NFL in scoring defense, highlighting Hafley's ability to craft a disciplined and effective defensive unit.
Under his guidance, Green Bay started this season with a 9-3-1 record, allowing just 19 points per game, an improvement from the 19.9 points per game surrendered during his first season.
However, the team faced significant challenges late in the season.
The loss of Micah Parsons in Week 15 had a dramatic impact. Parsons, a five-time Pro Bowler who recorded 12.5 sacks in 14 games, suffered a torn ACL.
Green Bay struggled in his absence, finishing the season on a five-game playoff losing streak, underscoring how critical Parsons was to Hafley's defensive strategy.
As Hafley continues to attract attention from several NFL franchises, the Dolphins' head-coaching search could ultimately come down to existing relationships and proven defensive expertise.
With a history of success in Green Bay and prior head-coaching experience at Boston College, Hafley presents a compelling option for a franchise seeking a coach capable of immediate results while building a sustainable foundation for the future.
