Sometimes, due to the excitement of certain moments, we are not really aware of what we say and the potential consequences it will have. Most of times, it does not represent nothing serious at all, but other times... we know we should have stayed silent.
Something like this happened to Darrell Doucette III, the quarterback for Team USA's flag football squad, following a bold claim he made two years ago that transformed from a viral soundbite into a reality check today.
After leading Team USA to a dominant 3-0 win over teams of NFL superstars at the Fanatics Flag Football Classic on March 21, 2026, Doucette took to The Rich Eisen Show to offer a his perspective on his "I'm better than Patrick Mahomes" comment.
Defending the "Flag" territory
Doucette's original stance in 2024 sparked a firestorm of memes at the time, including a notable response from Patrick Mahomes himself, who reacted on X with a GIF of a confused 50 Cent. Funny. However, Doucette explains that his confidence was not meant to be a dismissal of Mahomes' generational talent or power, but a defense of the sport he helped build. He said:
"What I truly was saying was if he and I stepped on that field today, that's how I felt. If y'all are just given a name, they shouldn't automatically just be able to come and take our territory from us because of the names. They got to come out and learn the game
Doucette's core message was embracing meritocracy over names and legacy. For the flag football veterans who have dedicated years to the 5-on-5 format, the assumption that NFL stars can simply walk on to the 2028 Olympic roster (and perform the game easily) feels, as he previously put it, disrespectful.
A masterclass at BMO Stadium
If Doucette's words were the talk of the town, his performance on the field was the proof of his point. Playing at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, Doucette and Team USA dismantled star-studded rosters led by Tom Brady and Joe Burrow.
The results were a wake-up call for the "tackle" world. Team USA surged to an early lead behind a Doucette touchdown, eventually crushing Burrow's squad 39-14. Then, against Brady's Founders, they provided a staggering display of precision, where Team USA recorded zero incomplete passes in the first half, cruising to a 43-16 victory.
They solidified their 3-0 record with a 24-14 win in a rematch against the Wildcats to claim the six-figure prize.
Doucette, who was named tournament MVP, showcased the IQ of the game he previously cited as his edge. While the NFL stars struggled with the 7-second pass clock and the lack of physical blocking, Doucette used his agility and deep knowledge of flag-specific spacing to carve through defenses featuring the likes of Jalen Ramsey and Davante Adams.
