A quiet patrol outside a Georgia grocery store ended with a familiar football name in handcuffs. Former NFLdefensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche was arrested last week after police suspected he had concealed grocery items while leaving a store and later discovered multiple outstanding warrants connected to him.
According to a police report obtained by TMZ Sports, the encounter began outside a Kroger store during what officers described as a routine check of nearby businesses.
An officer reported seeing Nkemdiche exit the store with what appeared to be large objects hidden inside his sweatpants. The shapes were described in the report as "square and rectangular" and consistent with concealed grocery items.
Police called for backup while continuing to monitor the situation.
Nkemdiche then walked toward a nearby gas station before officers approached him and placed the 31-year-old in handcuffs.
Robert Nkemdiche arrest: What police say happened outside the store
When officers searched Nkemdiche, the items were no longer inside his clothing.
A short time later, however, officers discovered frozen groceries, candy bars and almond milk scattered across the parking areas near the Kroger and the gas station.
Police returned to the store to confirm whether merchandise had been taken without payment. A representative for the grocery chain told officers the company did not want to press theft charges.
Instead, the store requested that Nkemdiche be criminally trespassed from the location.
The situation escalated once officers ran his name through law-enforcement databases.
Authorities reported finding multiple active warrants across several states, including three warrants in Georgia. Local officials instructed officers to place a hold on him.
Nkemdiche was then transported to jail and booked.
Police documents also noted that the groceries recovered from the parking lot were "perishable" and had to be discarded.
Once one of football's most intriguing prospects
Before the arrest, Robert Nkemdiche was known in football circles as one of the most physically gifted defensive prospects of his draft class.
The standout lineman from the Ole Miss Rebels entered the 2016 NFL Draft surrounded by significant expectations.
The Arizona Cardinals selected him in the first round, betting on a rare blend of size and athleticism that scouts consistently praised at the time.
Draft coverage from ESPN and official records from the NFL (National Football League) described him as a defensive tackle with elite physical traits who could become a dominant presence on the line.
While he showed flashes of that potential during his early professional seasons, injuries and roster changes kept him from establishing long-term stability in the league.
Earlier controversy followed him into the NFL
This is not the first time Nkemdiche has faced legal trouble.
In 2015, while still playing for the Ole Miss Rebels, he was arrested for drug possession following an incident involving a fall from a fourth-floor hotel window.
The case drew national attention ahead of the 2016 NFL Draft, though the Arizona Cardinals still selected him with a first-round pick.
The latest arrest adds another legal issue to a career that once carried enormous expectations.
Legal proceedings likely to determine the next steps
Because Kroger declined to pursue theft charges, the primary legal focus now centers on the outstanding warrants discovered during the police check.
Those cases will determine how the situation moves forward.
For Robert Nkemdiche, the incident brings renewed attention to a career that once positioned him among the most talked-about defensive prospects in college football.
