The Sweet 16 refers to the regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament. To reach this stage, teams must have already survived the grueling first and second rounds (the Round of 64 and Round of 32).

At this point, only 16 teams remain in the hunt for the national title. The winners of these matchups advance directly to the Elite Eight (the regional finals), moving one step closer to the Final Four.

Where is the Sweet 16 played in 2026?

The Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games are played in four rotating regional sites across the country. For the 2026 edition, the designated cities and arenas are:

  • East Regional: Prudential Center (Newark, New Jersey)
  • Midwest Regional: United Center (Chicago, Illinois)
  • South Regional: Toyota Center (Houston, Texas)
  • West Regional: Chase Center (San Francisco, California)

When is this phase played?

The Sweet 16 always takes place during the second week of the competition. For the 2026 tournament, the games are scheduled for Thursday, March 26 and Friday, March 27.

The winners of the Thursday games will play their Elite Eight matchups on Saturday, March 28, while the Friday winners will face off on Sunday, March 29.
