The story of Marcus Williamson has taken a sobering turn, with the former college football player now confronting the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence after pleading guilty to a string of bank robberies in Ohio.
Once part of a powerhouse Ohio State Buckeyes roster, Williamson admitted this week to nine counts of robbery tied to incidents that took place across Franklin County in the spring of 2024. The 27 year old is accused of stealing around $22,000 in total, using a method that prosecutors say was repeated across multiple banks before his eventual arrest.
According to court documents, Williamson would approach tellers wearing latex gloves and hand over a note demanding cash in $20, $50 and $100 denominations. In several of the robberies, he either stated or implied he had a weapon, escalating the severity of the charges.
Williamson's guilty plea marks a dramatic departure from a career that once placed him on one of college football's biggest stages. During his time at Ohio State between 2017 and 2021, he appeared in 46 games and was part of four Big Ten title winning teams.
Although he was not always a headline player, his role within a consistently elite program underscored the level he had reached as a recruit and athlete. Coming out of IMG Academy as a four star prospect, Williamson had been viewed as a player with significant potential.
That promise now sits in stark contrast to the charges he faces, as the focus shifts from his on field contributions to the legal consequences of his actions.
How investigators closed in on the robberies
Authorities say the robberies followed a clear and consistent pattern, which ultimately helped law enforcement identify Williamson as a suspect. The incidents occurred over a two month span between March and April 2024.
Investigators were already tracking the case when Williamson was arrested on April 24 after leaving a First Merchants Bank branch in Columbus. Officers stopped his vehicle shortly after and reportedly found money from the robbery in his possession.
Prosecutors allege that during five of the robberies, Williamson suggested he was armed, adding a further layer of seriousness to the case. While no weapon was reportedly recovered, the implication alone is enough to elevate the charges.
Sentencing date set as future hangs in balance
Williamson is currently being held at the Franklin County Jail as he awaits sentencing on June 25. The range of possible outcomes remains wide, from probation to a prison sentence that could exceed 40 years.
His guilty plea reduced the number of charges he faced, which initially included 17 counts of robbery alongside theft related offences. Even so, the remaining charges carry significant weight, particularly given the repeated nature of the crimes.
For a player who once celebrated conference titles and competed in front of packed stadiums, the next chapter will unfold far from the football field.
The court's decision in June will determine just how severe that fall becomes, as one of Ohio State's former players faces a life changing moment that extends well beyond sport.
