- NFL. The truth about Travis Kelce's contract: There are not two more years left after this season
Bill Belichick's second act in college football officially began this week as the North Carolina Tar Heels opened spring practice under the watchful eye of the 73-year-old NFL icon.
On Tuesday, Belichick addressed the local and international media at the Kenan Football Center, displaying a noticeably lighter demeanor than the one seen during a tumultuous 2025 campaign.
His girlfriend, 24-year-old Jordon Hudson, documented the scene on her Instagram Stories, sharing a close-up photo of the six-time Super Bowl winner with the caption: "All smiles with the Irish media."
The reference points to the presence of reporters from overseas, as UNC is set to headline the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Ireland later this year.
The positive energy at the podium follows a "disastrous" first year in Chapel Hill, where the Tar Heels finished with a 4-8 overall record and a dismal 2-6 mark in ACC play.
The season was characterized by an anemic offense that ranked near the bottom of the conference, leading Belichick to make several aggressive offseason changes.
Chief among them was the hiring of veteran offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, who has been tasked with revitalizing a unit that struggled to find its identity throughout 2025.
Despite the early setbacks, Belichick emphasized on Tuesday that he feels far more prepared for the upcoming season, noting that "95 percent of our team is in place" compared to the scramble of his first year.
"Obviously, there's a lot of changes from last year, but I'd say the big difference between this year and last year, for me, is just that we have our team now," Belichick stated. "That's way different than what we had last year."
Sophomore season to launch from Dublin
The 2026 schedule offers an immediate opportunity for redemption, as UNC will open the season in Dublin, Ireland, against the TCU Horned Frogs on August 29.
The matchup carries significant weight for Belichick's squad; exactly one year prior, TCU handed the coach a brutal 48-14 loss in his collegiate debut, a game that set the tone for the Tar Heels' eventual decline.
The "Week Zero" clash at Aviva Stadium marks the first time in program history that North Carolina will play a football game outside of the United States, providing a global stage for Belichick's attempt to prove his "pro-style" system can translate to the college ranks.
To bolster the roster for this international showdown, Belichick and his staff have doubled down on a youth-led philosophy.
The spring roster features a staggering 48 freshmen, a group Belichick described as the "foundation for our program."
