Deion Sanders' Colorado Buffaloes staff faced an unexpected shake-up when Warren Sapp, the team's pass rush coordinator, departed after two seasons.

Sapp's presence had helped transform the Buffaloes' pass rush, lifting sack totals from 27 in 2023 to 39 in 2024. Despite a drop to 13 sacks in 2025, his influence on defensive schemes remained significant.

Fans speculated a feud and perhaps a behind-closed-doors rivalry, however, but the real reasons were more personal and less dramatic.

"The Warren Sapp thing is the number one indicator, said Matt McChesney, a former Buffaloes guard, on ZERO 2 SIXTY W/ MATT MCCHESNEY. "The whole time we've been talking about like hiring your buddies and having yes-men on the staff, this is what happens.

"Then, when you disagree, you're not disagreeing with a coworker that you don't really know that well, that you have to have respect for.

"You're disagreeing with a friend, and you start yelling at each other and s**t, and it gets personal, and he just leaves."

To fill the void, Sanders moved quickly, hiring Vonn Bell as the new safety coach. Bell, a former second-round pick by the Saints in 2016, brings seven years of NFL experience and a Super Bowl appearance with the Bengals to the coaching staff.

So despite the speculation of tension with Sanders, insiders clarify that Sapp's departure was motivated by personal priorities.

His focus includes charity work, such as the Dolphins Cancer Challenge and fundraisers supporting cancer research.

Surprise quarterback contest in Colorado?

As spring camp begins, Colorado's quarterback room features redshirt freshman Julian Lewis as the projected starter, but competition is fierce with Utah transfer Isaac Wilson and three-star freshman Kaneal Sweetwyne also in the mix.

Sweetwyne, a dual-threat from Skyridge, completed 67 percent of his passes for 3,050 yards and 32 touchdowns last season while rushing for 907 yards and 14 touchdowns, earning 6A All-State honorable mention.

Learning behind Lewis and Wilson provides Sweetwyne the opportunity to refine mechanics, gain experience at the college level, and challenge for playing time if the starters struggle.

Sanders praised Lewis to the media, expressing confidence in his leadership while leaving the door open for competition. The offseason sets the stage for the Buffaloes to bounce back from a three-win season.

With Sapp gone, Bell joining, and a crowded quarterback room, Colorado's staff and roster are adjusting, highlighting the balance between high-profile hires, player development, and maintaining stability in a rebuilding program.

This combination of staff changes, positional battles, and offseason preparation signals that Sanders is committed to both growth and accountability as Colorado looks to improve on the field.
