A mistrial has been declared in the murder case involving former Miami Hurricanes defensive back and wide receiver Rashaun Jones, who was accused of killing former teammate Bryan Pata.
After hours of deliberation, jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict, prompting the judge to declare a mistrial.
One juror, speaking anonymously to ESPN, said only a single member of the panel supported a conviction, while the rest believed prosecutors failed to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
The state case was very weak, mostly circumstantial," the juror said.
The mistrial allows prosecutors to retry the case with a new jury, a step that must occur within 90 days if the state chooses to proceed.
Jones has maintained his innocence
Jones had been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the 2006 fatal shooting of Pata, who was killed outside his apartment months before he was expected to enter the 2007 NFL Draft.
Despite the incident occurring nearly two decades ago, Jones was not arrested until 2021 and has consistently maintained his innocence, declining a plea deal before trial.
During proceedings, prosecutors argued that tension between the two former teammates - allegedly tied to a dispute involving a girlfriend - provided motive.
A central element of the state's case came from former Miami instructor Paul Conner, who testified he saw a man walking away from Pata's apartment complex shortly after the shooting and later identified Jones in a police lineup seven months later.
The defense dismantled the prosecutor's case against Jones
Defense attorneys challenged that testimony, emphasizing the brief and poorly lit encounter, uncertainty over whether the witness was wearing glasses at the time, and the lengthy delay before the identification.
The defense also questioned the strength of claims regarding any feud between the players and highlighted the lack of direct physical evidence linking Jones to the crime.
Jones and Pata were teammates during the 2005 and 2006 seasons at Miami. Pata, a standout defensive lineman, was widely projected as a potential NFL Draft selection before his death.
Jones has remained incarcerated since his arrest in 2021 while legal proceedings continue.
