Steve Sarkisian has one goal in mind: to get Arch Manning to the College Football Playoff (CFP) at any cost. To that end, the Texas head coach is making a major overhaul of his coaching staff, which includes bringing in former Florida interim head coach Billy Gonzalez.
This season, the Longhorns fell short of the CFP, finishing with a 10-3 record (6-2 SEC) after a shaky start under Manning.
However, since the end of the 2025-2026 NCAA season, Sarkisian has been focused on revamping his staff, hiring people who can help him achieve his goals.
Among them is Gonzalez, who coached the Gators for the final five games of the regular season after Billy Napier was fired. Gonzalez will be largely responsible for Manning's success or failure.
Will Gonzalez be able to revolutionize the Longhorns' offense?
Billy Gonzalez arrives in Texas as an offensive analyst, in addition to working with the wide receivers, to give Manning more reliable targets in this new push for the CFP.
Before becoming Florida's interim head coach, Gonzalez was the Gators' wide receivers coach from 2023 to 2025 after a first stint in the same position from 2005 to 2009.
Sarkisian's new assistant has a long coaching history, including stints at Utah, LSU, Illinois, Mississippi State, and Florida Atlantic.
Although he won't be directly in charge of the team, fans and analysts are concerned that he only won one of the five games he coached the Gators.
Sarkisian is rebuilding the Longhorns from the ground up
Beyond some recruiting successes, including securing quarterback Ty Knutson's commitment, Sarkisian wants to give his players a star-studded coaching staff.
