- NCAA. NFL snubs Colorado Buffaloes: Deion Sanders faces setback in 2026 scouting combine
- NCAA. Steve Young admits to feeling frustrated about what happened with Deion Sanders: "It doesn't make sense"
Hall of Famer and Colorado head coach Deion Sanders is widely known as "Coach Prime," a confident figure whose larger-than-life personality has shaped both football and pop culture. But behind the swagger lies a deeply personal story. Recently, Sanders revealed a lingering emotional regret connected to his late father and stepfather - a confession that shows a far more vulnerable side of the NFL legend.
In a candid reflection, Sanders admitted he never expressed a simple but powerful message to the two men who helped shape his life.
Both my stepfather, my brother, my father, they all passed away without me ever saying I love you. That haunts me to this day.
The statement offers rare insight into the emotional weight carried by the former two-sport superstar, whose upbringing was marked by both hardship and guidance.
A complicated childhood that shaped Coach Prime
Sanders grew up navigating relationships with two paternal figures - his biological father, Mims Sanders, and his stepfather, Willie J. Knight. His parents separated when he was very young, limiting time with his biological father, who struggled with addiction before passing away from a brain tumor in 1993 at age 50.
Years later, Sanders reflected on the dynamic:
I had two fathers, two wonderful fathers; one was a drug addict, one was somewhat of an alcoholic.
Despite challenges, Sanders credits his stepfather for providing stability and discipline in his formative years. Knight instilled values that continue to guide him today - especially loyalty to family and sobriety.
"My stepfather always said... take care of your mom," Sanders shared.
Sanders numbers in NFL:
- 8x Pro Bowler
- 2x Super Bowl Champion
- NFL 1990s All-Decade Team
- 1994 Defensive Player of the Year
The advice became a cornerstone of Sanders' life philosophy. Rather than expressing affection verbally, he often demonstrated it through actions - including tributes honoring his mother, Connie Knight, such as a signature shoe dedicated as a "love letter" to her.
The Sanders, a lesson that led to an unexpected arrest
While his stepfather provided life guidance, he also introduced Sanders to a lifelong passion: fishing. The hobby became a form of therapy for the football icon, but it once landed him in legal trouble.
Lord, I thank you for my late stepfather, who introduced me to fishing.
During his coaching tenure at Jackson State, Sanders reportedly discovered a lake near an airport and began fishing there - unaware he was trespassing. Local authorities intervened, and the incident resulted in a minor arrest.
Though harmless in hindsight, the moment symbolized something deeper: memories tied to the man who influenced his values and personal habits.
Today, Sanders channels those lessons into fatherhood and mentorship. As a coach and parent, he emphasizes presence, encouragement, and emotional openness - perhaps shaped by the words he never got to say.
For Coach Prime, the past isn't just history. It's motivation - and a reminder to express love while there's still time.
