- NCAA. Deion Sanders shifts approach, adds FCS tight end for depth
- NCAA. Who is Carson Beck's girlfriend and what happened with his ex Hanna Cavinder?
Deion Sanders has never shied away from bold decisions, and his latest roster move is another example of that fearless approach. Colorado has landed former Tennessee defensive back Boo Carter, a player with undeniable on-field talent and equally undeniable baggage. The commitment gives the Buffaloes a potential difference-maker in the secondary, but it also places the spotlight squarely on whether Carter can mature fast enough to make the most of his second chance.
Carter arrives in Boulder after two seasons with the Volunteers, where he flashed serious promise early in his career. As a freshman, he appeared in 13 games and earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team. His sophomore year showed continued growth between the lines. Off the field, however, the story became far more complicated.
A fresh start after a turbulent exit from Tennessee
Problems reportedly began before Carter's second season even kicked off. After signing a new NIL deal, reports surfaced that he had started missing workouts and arriving late to team meetings. The situation escalated during the preseason, and transfer rumors began circulating publicly - fueled in part by comments from his mother, Shareca Carter.
In August, she posted a message on Facebook that raised eyebrows across the college football world:
"I can't wait to mfn Go! Fast!"
Speculation grew that Carter might be dismissed from the program. While Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel initially allowed him to remain with the team, the concerns never fully went away. By November, Carter was no longer part of the Volunteers' program, with reports suggesting he had been dismissed. Whispers of possible gang connections added another layer of controversy.
Those rumors were firmly rejected by his mother, who responded with an emotional post defending her son:
"Let me clear some st up real fast! My son Boo Carter ain't got st to do with st going on! He not affiliated with no Gang! So whoever running telling the school st get ya facts right! Far as somebody supposedly saying he can't come back to the city to try some! Yall think I'm all talk ight! I'll sit down for mine and majority know I will!"
Now, with the past behind him, Carter is officially moving forward. After visiting Colorado's campus, he committed to Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes, giving the program a talented defender with All-SEC upside.
Why Deion Sanders believes the risk is worth it
There's no denying that Sanders is betting on upside. From a pure football standpoint, Carter has the tools to become a key piece in Colorado's secondary. Coach Prime has built much of his brand around giving players opportunities, but also demanding accountability. In that sense, this move feels very on-brand.
Interestingly, Colorado always seemed like the destination Shareca Carter preferred. After previously criticizing Tennessee, she made a point to praise Sanders and the Buffs, signaling strong support for the move to Boulder.
Carter has also pushed back on the idea that his exit from Tennessee was purely disciplinary, citing an injury in his transfer portal announcement. As with most situations like this, both sides have their version of the truth.
One thing is clear: the narrative around Boo Carter will depend entirely on what happens next. If he embraces the culture Sanders is building and stays drama-free, this could become one of the smartest additions of the offseason. If the issues resurface, criticism will quickly follow, and the "I told you so" crowd will grow louder.
For now, Colorado is rolling the dice and trusting that talent, structure, and a fresh start can rewrite the story.
