The New York Giants made headlines this week after parting ways with head coach Brian Daboll. The move came less than a day after the team's 2-8 start and another late-game collapse against Chicago. Within minutes of the announcement, social media lit up with one familiar name: Bill Belichick.

The 73-year-old coach is in his first year leading the North Carolina Tar Heels. When asked on Tuesday if he would consider a return to East Rutherford, Belichick kept his answer short and pointed.

Getting ready for Wake Forest, that's all I got this week. I've been asked about [an NFL return] from time to time. I'm focused on Wake Forest, that's it. That's my commitment to this team.

A familiar name in Giants history

Belichick's connection to the Giants runs deep. He was Bill Parcells' defensive coordinator when the franchise won Super Bowls XXI and XXV, and he has often spoken with admiration about those championship years and his partnership with Lawrence Taylor.

The current version of Belichick is a very different figure from the one who left New England in 2024. His relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson has drawn tabloid attention, and his debut college season has been uneven. North Carolina sits at 4-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

According to Reuters, Giants general manager Joe Schoen will lead the search for Daboll's replacement, and league insiders have not ruled out Belichick as a future candidate. Even so, his comments suggest no immediate plans to leave Chapel Hill.

The idea of Belichick returning to New York feels both nostalgic and risky. He remains a coaching legend, yet questions linger about whether his style fits today's NFL and whether the Giants are ready to hand him the control he usually demands. For now, he insists he is focused on college football. The speculation, however, shows no sign of slowing down.
