With the college football regular season done and dusted, the time has come for the best teams in the nation to battle it out in the College Football Playoff. But they won't be the only ones with eyes on them, as plenty of other teams will have a chance to showcase their talents at various bowl games. Some bowl games may get more eyes than some of the playoff games, and the one with the most views could very well be Colorado's.

The Buffaloes are set to play BYU in the Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas on December 28. A lot of teams will see some of their star players opt to not play in bowl games and avoid potential injury ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, but fans will get to see Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders in that game. Both players will come into the game with personal hardware under their belts.

Travis Hunter named AP College Football Player of the Year

Sanders won the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm awards recently. Hunter one-upped him by being named the AP College Football Player of the Year on Thursday, the second-most important honor in the sport. Now, he's looking to win the most important: the Heisman Trophy.

Hunter is the overwhelming favorite in terms of betting odds, and being named AP College Football Player of the Year almost guarantees he will win the Heisman. Why? Because the last eight players to win the AP award have been voted as the Heisman winner as well.

In fact, over the last 20 years, the Heisman hasn't gone to the AP winner on only two occasions.

  • 2015: Derrick Henry (Heisman), Christian McCaffrey (AP)
  • 2009: Mark Ingram (Heisman), Ndamukong Suh (AP)

It's rare for voters of the two awards to disagree much, so Hunter should be feeling great about his chances. Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, who is Hunter's only real competition for the Heisman, should feel a bit slighted.

At the least, Jeanty received 16 out of a possible 43 votes for the AP award. Hunter got 26, so it was definitely somewhat close. There is still a sliver of hope for the RB heading into Saturday.
