In this way, Molly Born, who was fourth more than a minute behind the leaders, won ahead of Ellwood and Rodenfels, who completed the podium. After the error, McClain, Hurley and Kurgat finished in ninth, 12th and 13th place respectively, about two minutes behind Born. Wesley Kiptoo won the men's race.
Despite the claims, it should be remembered that McClain also lost the $20,000 prize money awarded to the male and female race winners, USA Track & Field said that "the jury of appeal determined that the event failed to meet USATF Rule 243 and that the course was not properly marked at the time of the misdirection. This infringement contributed to the misdirection of the athletes who were in the top four at the time."
In that statement, the USATF explained that "however, the appeals jury finds no recourse within the USATF rules to alter the order of finish of the results. The order of finish of the results, as published, is considered final."
According to the race rules, athletes are responsible for knowing the course route. The race served as a qualifying test for the 2026 World Road Running Championships. However, USATF said that qualification was not closed.
