The New York Yankees are preparing for what promises to be a must-watch Opening Night game against the San Francisco Giants. They will send Max Fried to the mound, while the Giants will counter with one of the best MLB pitchers, Logan Webb.

A Weakness for Logan Webb

There is no doubt that Logan Webb's stats are impressive. However, the Yankees may have the perfect matchup strategy to hurt him in a game where they aim to start the 2026 MLB season strong.

The fact that Webb struggles more against left-handed hitters puts the Bronx Bombers in a favorable position, as they have plenty of them. In fact, they could deploy the following left-handed lineup:

  • Catcher: Austin Wells
  • First baseman: Ben Rice
  • Second baseman: Jazz Chisholm Jr.
  • Third baseman: Ryan McMahon
  • Left fielder: Cody Bellinger
  • Center fielder: Trent Grisham

One of the most criticized aspects of the Yankees roster could actually become a key advantage. During the 2025 MLB season, according to StatMuse, Webb allowed 114 hits and 8 home runs to left-handed batters, along with 104 strikeouts.

Against right-handed hitters, he allowed 96 hits and 6 home runs, while recording 120 strikeouts.

Beyond the left-handed bats, the Yankees also feature power right-handed hitters like Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge, adding even more offensive firepower.

There is no debate: Logan Webb is an elite MLB pitcher and the right choice to open the season for the San Francisco Giants. His performance with Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, along with his strong 2025 stats - a 3.22 ERA and 1.24 WHIP over 34 starts - fully support that.

However, even the best pitchers have key weaknesses. If Webb continues to struggle against left-handed batters, the New York Yankees have the tools to exploit that edge and potentially secure an Opening Day win.
