The Mexican National Baseball Team delivered a strong performance in the 2026 World Baseball Classic by authoritatively defeating the Brazilian National Baseball Team 16-0 in just six innings, thanks to the so-called "mercy rule".
The match was played in a spectacular atmosphere at Daikin Park, home of the Houston Astros in MLB, where thousands of Mexican fans supported them from start to finish.
With this result, the team led by Benjamin Gil improved its record to 2-0 in the tournament and is very close to securing its place in the quarterfinals.
Randy Arozarena ignited the Mexican offense
Mexico did not take long to take control of the game. From the first inning, they put together a four-run rally that made it clear that they were in control.
The first score came when Jonathan Aranda hit a long single that allowed the always dangerous Randy Arozarena to score.
Shortly thereafter, catcher Alejandro Kirk hit a powerful double that drove in another run. The offense continued with production from Nick Gonzales and Alek Thomas, who extended the lead in the same inning. The early blow was enough to put Brazil on the ropes, and they never managed to recover in the game.
Mexico unleashed an authentic offensive fiesta
The Mexican offensive continued to produce in the following innings and turned the game into an authentic batting festival.
In the second inning, Jarren Duran appeared with a home run to right field, increasing the lead.
The fourth inning proved to be the key to extending the lead. Duran came through again with a double that allowed Alek Thomas and Joey Ortiz to score.
Alejandro Kirk then hit a three-run homer, sparking celebrations from the fans in attendance at the stadium.
Mexico continued to add to the score with productions from Nacho Alvarez Jr, Joey Meneses and other players who took advantage of every offensive opportunity.
The advantage was completed in the sixth inning with a new home run by Alek Thomas and another by Julian Ornelas, hits that closed the final score at 16-0.
Mexico aims for the quarter-finals
The Mexican team maintained the momentum it showed in the previous edition of the tournament, when it surprised the world by reaching the semifinals of the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
Now, with two victories in the group, Mexico will play for its place in the next round in two high-level matches.
First, they will face the powerful United States baseball team, and then close the group stage against the Italy baseball team. Only the top two teams in the group will advance to the quarterfinals, so each game will be decisive. For the moment, Mexico made it clear against Brazil that its offense is on fire and that it has the arguments to fight again among the world's baseball powers.
