Greenland is the geopolitical position of the moment. The US action to obtain the Danish sovereign territory has put everyone on alert. Trump has it as an urgent enclave and is trying to get it to a good port for good... or for bad as it is reacting. But what about Russia? Anything to say?
It was Russia's ambassador to Denmark, Vladimir Barbin, who said that Moscow harbours no hostile intentions towards Greenland. He even rejected any aggressive approach and stated that Russia does not contemplate military actions or threats in the Arctic region, after the United States said that it intends to take over the island "to prevent it from falling into the hands of Moscow or Beijing".
To all this is added the statement of intent by the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova. She stated recently that Moscow is closely monitoring the situation and advocates resolving any disagreements through negotiations based on international law.
Moscow's approach to Greenland
From Russia, it seems that they have a clear roadmap as far as Greenland is concerned. Hence, they do not seek to pressure or occupy these territories. Moreover, its foreign policy is based on cooperation and mutual respect with regard to this area.
However, Barbin did hasten to point out that NATO's involvement in the Arctic favours a confrontational dynamic that ends up weakening rather than strengthening regional security.
