ABC is facing significant financial fallout after canceling Taylor Frankie Paul's season of The Bachelorette just days before its scheduled premiere on March 22, 2026, a decision driven by resurfaced footage of alleged domestic violence.

On March 19, Disney Entertainment Television announced the last-minute cancellation, citing a 2023 video that showed Paul throwing chairs at her ex, Dakota Mortensen, as the reason for halting production and focusing on supporting the family.

"In light of the newly released video just surfaced today," ABC said, in a statement. "We have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of The Bachelorette at this time, and our focus is on supporting the family."

Reports suggest ABC could lose tens of millions, factoring in production costs, ad sales, marketing, licensing fees, and trade-out deals with airlines, hotels, and other brands, with each episode reportedly costing around $2 million to produce.

The Bachelorette season length varies, typically ranging from nine to 13 episodes, and the Paul season's exact number of installments has not been publicly disclosed, leaving the network with complex calculations on lost revenue and contractual obligations.

Following the cancellation, ABC removed Paul and The Bachelorette from its website, while Warner Bros. TV Group now faces challenges in distributing the show internationally and recovering revenue from prearranged licensing agreements.

The network also has to address advertising commitments. In 2024, the franchise charged $86,955 for a 30-second spot on The Golden Bachelorette, and similar arrangements, including sponsorships and cross-promotions, could result in significant financial shortfalls.

The Bachelorette's cancellation underscores the high stakes for reality television networks, where controversial personal conduct by participants can lead to massive financial losses, affecting ad revenue, international licensing, and corporate partnerships alike.

ABC now faces a difficult path forward in managing lost revenue while safeguarding the franchise's reputation, with executives and producers evaluating the broader implications of abrupt cancellations on their primetime reality lineup.

The dramatic legal issues between Paul and Mortensen

The cancellation follows the resurfacing of a video showing Paul allegedly attacking Mortensen in 2023, with her children present in the room.

TMZ published the footage, reigniting scrutiny over her prior misdemeanor charges for assault, criminal mischief, and domestic violence.

The 2023 incident prompted renewed attention to the legal proceedings surrounding Paul, highlighting the complexities of her case and the impact of her actions on her family, while also raising questions about the potential fallout for The Bachelorette franchise.

"This is called physical abuse, Your daughter just got hit in the head by a metal chair," Mortensen said in the footage but Paul's spokesperson responded, calling the video a manipulative attempt to damage her reputation.

The representative stated it omits context and unfairly targets her on their son's birthday while ignoring his prior behavior, highlighting the ongoing family conflict.

Paul eventually pled guilty in abeyance to aggravated assault, meaning the charge will be dismissed if she fulfills plea conditions.

The other charges have been dismissed, and Paul previously described the period as "the hardest time" in her life during a 2025 interview with Call Her Daddy.

Paul and Mortensen's relationship, documented on Hulu's The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, began in 2022 following her split from ex-husband Tate Paul, and they share a son, Ever.
