Joseph Garrett Duggar, known for his role on the long-running reality TV series 19 Kids and Counting, was taken into custody on March 18 in connection with alleged sexual abuse of a minor, according to law enforcement.

The Bay County Sheriff's Office confirmed officers charged Duggar, 31, with multiple counts of "lewd and lascivious behavior," including alleged molestation of a child under 12 from an incident that investigators say occurred during a 2020 family trip to Panama City Beach, Fla.

Details released by authorities indicate that law enforcement action followed a referral from the Tontitown Police Department in Arkansas, where Duggar resides with his wife and children.

The alleged victim, who is now 14 years old, reported the alleged abuse years after it occurred, prompting the cross-state investigation that ultimately led to his arrest.

Court documents filed in Bay County charge Duggar with lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim younger than 12 and additional counts of lewd conduct by an adult.

He remains in custody in Arkansas as extradition proceedings move forward. Prosecutors have not yet disclosed when his initial court appearance in Florida will take place.

Investigation timeline and circumstances

According to the sheriff's office, investigators were contacted on Wednesday by a liaison from the Tontitown Police Department after the alleged victim came forward. The report described multiple incidents during a family vacation.

After the victim's father learned of the allegations and confronted Duggar, authorities say he admitted to the conduct both to the father and to detectives.

While the exact sequence of investigative steps and interviews has not been fully detailed publicly, Bay County officials characterized the case as involving serious, unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

Charges of "lewd and lascivious behavior" in Florida generally pertain to intentional acts of a sexual nature involving children under the age of consent offenses that carry significant prison sentences if the defendant is convicted.

Duggar appeared on 19 Kids and Counting, a TLC series that chronicled the life of the large, devoutly religious Duggar family from Arkansas.

The show, which debuted in 2008, focused on the family's efforts to raise 19 children and espoused strict values around courtship, modesty, and faith. It was canceled in 2015 after public revelations about another Duggar family member's past sexual misconduct.

The Duggar family, including patriarch Jim Bob and matriarch Michelle, rose to fame for their conservative lifestyle and public profile.

In recent years, members of the family have been the subject of intense media scrutiny and legal issues related to abuse and exploitation of minors.

Law enforcement in Florida noted that Duggar's arrest is linked directly to allegations from the victim, now a teenager, whose account set this investigation in motion.

Authorities emphasize that abuse cases involving minors are often complex and may be reported long after alleged incidents occur.
