Tesla and Elon Musk have suffered a difficult few months, if not years, with the rise of Chinese companies launching cars with very similar features to Teslas at a fraction of the price. However, they have managed to ride the wave and avoid sinking. Now they finally seem to have managed to come to the surface for a breath of fresh air in the form of 57,000 sales completed in China in the month of August.
After a few difficult months, Tesla has achieved a significant rebound in its sales during this month, giving clear signs of recovery in one of the most competitive markets in the world.
How is Tesla doing in China?
According to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Tesla sold 57,152 vehicles at retail in August, representing an increase of 48.1% compared to May and 41% compared to July. These figures mark a respite for the company, which had been facing year-on-year declines.
In addition, the Giga Shanghai plant recorded its best performance of the year in terms of wholesale deliveries, with 83,192 units, up 22.6% from July.
Of this total, 24,304 were Model 3 sedans and 58,888 Model Y units, consolidating it as the main protagonist.
The Model Y, the best-selling Tesla in China
The Model Y remained Tesla's flagship product in China, accounting for 69% of local sales. Its popularity was such that it was the second best-selling vehicle in the country in August.
In terms of manufacturers, Tesla ranked ninth overall among all car brands in China, a considerable achievement given that its catalog is focused solely on electric vehicles.
Although the results for August are encouraging, not everything is rosy. Compared to the same month in 2024, Tesla's sales in China fell by 10%, and so far this year they are down 7% compared to the previous period.
However, the last three months have shown a positive change: sales grew 12.6% compared to the previous quarter, reflecting renewed momentum for the second half of 2025.
The impact of the Model Y L
One of the factors behind this improvement is the arrival of the Tesla Model Y L, an extended version of the six-seat electric SUV, designed especially for the Chinese market. This model has already begun to be delivered in the country, and is expected to contribute even more to the company's performance at the end of the third quarter.
