David Benavidez reignites Canelo Alvarez fight talks as boxing legend runs out of options

The Mexican Monster doesn't see many paths for Canelo, and that could lead the veteran back to Benavidez.

At the moment, Canelo Alvarez is in a holding pattern. Following a crushing loss to Terence Crawford, in which "Bud" took all of Alvarez's super middleweight belts, Canelo's boxing future is up in the air. Retirement isn't reall an option for the Mexican at the moment.

But it's been hard for fans and analysts to find the right fit for Alvarez's next fight, especially if he wants to fight for high stakes once again. With the idea of fighting a lower level boxer not in anyone's mind, the thought of a David Benavidez bout has once again come up. A hyopthetical fight that once dominated the national boxing conversation is now back in the fold. And it's thanks to Benavidez himself.

David Benavidez is never giving up on the Canelo Alvarez fight

Despite recently telling MARCA in an exclusive interview that he has nearly forgotten about Canelo, due to Alvarez being "not very interested" and him focusing on light heavyweight and cruiserweight, it seems as though Benavidez may have changed course. Benavidez had told MARCA that "I do not rule out" a Canelo fight still coming to fruition.

He has only amplified that possibility with recent comments he made to talkSPORT. In Benavidez's mind, until Alvarez retires, the possibility of fighting him remains; especially now that Canelo seems to be running out of legitimate options.

At the end of the day, what other fights are left for Canelo? Now, it seems like I've got the cards in my hands: He doesn't have any belts at 168. I have a belt at 175, and I'm planning on getting all the belts at 175. He says he's chasing greatness. He did what he did at 168, so now, why not come up to 175 and do the same thing?

With a Crawford rematch almost out of the picture, Alvarez's next bout is murky. That isn't helped by Canelo recently having elbow surgery. Alvarez could choose to have a tune-up fight in 2026 before putting together another mega-fight. There's no reason Benavidez can't be an option there.
